Our 18 point checklist
  1. Check over engine for fire or corrosion damage and verify engine hours​
  2. Run up the engine from a cold start
  3. Perform compression and spark test
  4. Remove propeller and gearbox, inspect water pump condition
  5. Check thermostat operation and pressure relieve poppet valves
  6. Check gearshift/throttle/steering operation
  7. Check battery charge and load test battery
  8. Remove fuel filters and inspect for water
  9. Check fuel lines and connections
  10. Test steering lock to lock
  11. Inspect battery and connections
  12. Test all electronics on board and call coast guard on VHF
  13. Check trim/tilt system and levels
  14. Check cooling system
  15. Inspect water pump and gear oil
  16. ​Check anchor and warp
  17. Test remote controls and tilt switches
  18. Check trailer in a good structural condition with surface rust only, tyres and springs all ok, WOF current​​​

More tips to help you buy right

Before arranging the boat pre purchase inspection, here are some things to check:

  • ​Make sure you can start the outboard and it idles smoothly
  • Run the motor and place your hand on the cylinder head and exhaust plates. They should feel very warm, not hot to touch. ​ ​
  • Look over the boat hull for damage and wear and tear 
  • Check the trailer for obvious rust on the axels 
  • Ask for a service history on the boat and if possible get copies of previous service invoices
