Wondering how to maintain your outboard motor? We can help. With our 9-step boat maintenance checklist you can keep your boat and motor running mint. We recommend doing these checks every 6 weeks.
1. Run your outboard using ear-muffs for 5 - 10 minutes This will help keep the engine running smoothly and keep fuel from going stale.
2. Remove cover and hose down engine to remove salt Salt is the leading cause of corrosion and ultimately engine failure. Once clean allow your engine to air-dry before replacing the cover.
3. Turn steering wheel to full lock in both directions Avoid steering issues by checking that your steering wheel is free at full lock in both directions. Spray arm with lubricant.
4. Trim motor up and down Ensure you're able to trim freely and spray pivot points and rams with lubricant.
5. Flick on all electrical instruments It's always a good idea to check your instruments are working before you need them.
6. Lube control box lever Lube remote box handle and lever on control box.
7. Spray/lube trailer jockey wheel Lubricating the jockey wheel will help keep it free and in good working order.
8. Check trailer tyre pressure Keep trailer tyres pressures to 10psi below max pressure rating to avoid flat spots.
9. Inspect under-floor fuel tank If you have an under-floor fuel tank with water pump trap, drain or inspect at the clear site glass.
